Jedi's

Bennett doesn’t truly understand what all is going on, because we just don't have clear answers yet and because pacing information feels important right now. All he knows is that we are trying to get to the bottom of his “peculiar leg issues”, as he calls them.

The kids are Star Wars obsessed right now. My brain, especially in the work that I do, only really thinks in analogies. When we went to see the neurologist in Calgary in May, I came up with this idea that I shared with Bennett to help him understand why we needed to pursue these appointments and why he has had to undergo so many tests, many of which he would do anything to avoid.

I told him this:

There are going to be so many different challenges, battles and missions you will go on in life. We all do. Sometimes we don’t even know what the mission is until we are in it. We don’t get a warning or a set of instructions to help us through. In order to conquer different battles you will need different Jedi’s. Jedi's that are experts at that particular mission. In all of your challenges you will have some consistent Jedi’s. For example: Mom, Dad & Nix will ALWAYS be there for whatever mission you're on. But we aren't exactly experts at everything so, sometimes we will recruit new Jedi's who have special skills that can help us to win that battle.

In the “mysterious leg battle” we are recruiting a lot of new ones. Dr. P, our neurologist, Bennett decided could be Obi Wan. Second highest rank. I agreed that was a good position for him. When he told him at his appointment, Dr. P was somewhat disappointed not to be Master Yoda but he accepted his rank, agreed that Bennett must be Yoda and was totally on board to join Bennett as a Jedi on this mission.

Since that appointment, B has gained lots of new and amazing Jedi's. Some that work in hospitals and clinics. Some that work at school. Others who show up in different areas of our lives; friends, coaches and of course, family. Gary and I have been building our team of Jedi's to help us too.

I'm not going to lie, the kids Star Wars obsession has me a bit lost most days and I never would have imagined that I would have found comfort inside that story. But life can be strange and hard and even cruel sometimes, and the truth is, we all need Jedi's to help us get through. I'm grateful we have added so many amazing one's to our lives through this, they provide comfort in the pain and offer just the right amount of encouragement and hope to face whatever lies ahead.
